Okoume plywood, also known by its Vietnamese name, is mahogany or West Indian mother of pearl. This plant is native to southern Florida, Jamaica and Cuba. This wood has a light reddish brown color with wavy, alternating veins, so it is often used in the construction of indoor furniture.

Okoume (Mahogany) wood belongs to the oval family, has a straight, rounded trunk that can grow to about 20-35 m tall. It is a woody plant with semi-evergreen leaves of medium size. Okoume plywood made from this wood has the following characteristics:
  • Color: light red to beautiful deep brown red (dark with age), or pearly with ripples
  • Sapwood: clear, separate
  • Wood grain: straight or interlocking
  • Texture: Durable
  • Distortion: low
  • Physical properties are based on the maturity centers of the wood sample and these properties can vary depending on growing conditions and origin.
