What is Birch Plywood?

Birch plywood is a fine-grained wood material commonly used in cabinetry, shelving, and constructing drawers, desks, and other fixtures. The reason that birch plywood makes for a great wood substitute is its resistance to bending and warping over time. Because the surface and make of birch ply is so sturdy, it’s easier to fasten it together using screws that hold firm due to hollow-free compactness.

When it comes to revamping any space, durability is always a primary feature to look out for, and in this case, birch plywood makes for a highly durable option when it comes to home or office spaces. With cross-banded layers of veneer, birch plywood is built to last and resistant to decay. 

How to manufacture Birch Plywood?

Like any other Plywood variety, Birch follows the same manufacturing process. Obviously, with the one crucial difference of the original source material being its source from European Baltic Birch plantations. Once the trees are removed from the plantation, they’re dragged to a loading area by handy vehicles known as skidders. Here the logs are cut to size and loaded onto trucks in a long pile called a log deck.

Once cut and loaded the wood is ready to begin its exciting journey to the plywood mill. At the mill, they are placed onto a conveyor belt to be pushed through the debarking machine, which, as the name suggests, removes the bark from the tree. The wood is then softened through exposure to immense heat, allowing the blocks to be fed through the peeler lathe one at a time to create birch veneers from the surface. Optical scanners then analyze the materials to look for defects or any issues that need to be removed. Next up, the pieces are glued together and loaded into a hot press, before being passed through saws to be trimmed and cut to the desired lengths. With all of that out of the way, we’re left with a beautiful sheet of Birch Plywood!

Why Birch Plywood in particular?

Bonded through the use of a hot press, the Birch veneers that make up our Plywood sheets boast specific qualities to suit its intended use. Whilst birch plywood is often employed in making furniture, walls/ceilings, claddings and fascias, its most notable use is in model making for certain vehicles, particular aircraft – in fact it’s actually also known as Aircraft Plywood.

 

From WWII planes and experimental craft to narrowboats, birch plywood is perfect when structural integrity, a low overall weight, and water resistance are key. There are numerous reasons for this: the adhesives used in production grant it increased resistance to heat and humidity, its versatility makes it suitable for a wide range of designs and sizes, and the light color of Birch also adds to the aesthetic quality of the wood.
